Penny for your thoughts…

One question I always want to know is how I can make these beautiful blooms last longer. While some flowers, like daffodils, have a relatively short vase life which only reminds me to soak in their intoxicating scent all the more, others we can push a little farther.

This month, we will focus on how to achieve this with tulips. We grow heirloom variety tulips on the farm, often mistaken for peonies given their fluffy, double blooms. Their decadent, rich colors can last longer with…. A penny or a pin hole!

If you place a penny which is pre 1982 into your vase, you will increase the bloom life as the copper acts like a natural fungicide.

Another idea- try poking a tiny pin hole in the tulip stem, just below the flower head. The theory is this will release air bubbles trapped in the stem, allowing them to drink more water.

In addition, fresh 45 degree cuts and changing the water every other day will revitalize your blooms.

If you have any other wild ideas for prolonging tulip vase life, let us know!

Cheers from the farm,

Chelsea
